Where
Pendulum made extensive use of SyFlex for nearly every major sequence within the 16
minutes of high-end cut-scene cinematics for Midway's LA Rush game property. Multiple
characters throughout the entire production are clad in SyFlex-simmed clothes and
take advantage of SyFlex-assisted hair simulation solutions.
More
Director of 3D, Michael McCormick, shares more details:
"Due to the massive numbers of characters and shots, we had originally believed
that we would only be able to sim a few select articles of clothing.
However, SyFlex gave us such a significant advantage with speed and stability that
we decided to simulate a collection of outfits over many shots.
We decided against simulating high-resolution clothing meshes due to our time
constraints, so we created low-resolution sim meshes that would give an appropriate
amount of movement detail but simulate rapidly.
We then used the low resolution simulation meshes to drive our high resolution clothing.
This gave us general cloth movement on very high resolution geometry, but at a fraction of the simulation cost."
Pendulum Studios is a San Diego based 3D animation and effects studio specializing in high-end character animation and story-telling. Owned and operated by directors, Michael McCormick and Robert Taylor, the studio strives to produce the highest quality animation for commercials, game cinematics, film, and their own animated shorts.
